Il a réussi, dès ses trois premières apparitions, à enregistrer le meilleur début de saison de la ligue pour une nouvelle recrue depuis 1995. Un total de 72 points lors de ses 3 premiers matchs avec l’équipe d’Indiana.
Avec 19 points dans une défaite de 114 à 107 contre les Wizards de Washington, 26 contre les Spurs de San Antonio, 27 face à Detroit lors de la première victoire des Pacers (124-115), Bennedict Mathurin est devenu le nouveau Jerry Stackhouse. L’ancien scoreur Stackhouse, deux fois All-Star, a été en effet le dernier joueur de première année à totaliser au moins autant de points en amassant 76 avec les 76ers de Philadelphie lors de l’exercice de 1995.
Numéro 6 du repêchage de la NBA en 2022, Mathurin a donc réalisé du jamais vu depuis 27 ans, un exploit qui serait en phase avec les objectifs qu’il s’est fixés, dont le titre de Rookie de l’année. Ce dernier affole lui aussi les stats avec quatre matchs consécutifs à minimum 20 point, du jamais vu depuis Grant Hill en 1994. Voilà donc un concurrent de taille pour le natif de Montréal.
